NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single national entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, and other undergraduate medical courses in India. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET determines admission to over 1.09 lakh MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges.
With approximately 24 lakh students appearing each year and a limited number of seats, NEET is one of India's most competitive examinations. This guide provides a structured preparation strategy.
NEET 2025 Examination Structure
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 50 (45 compulsory) | 180 |
| Chemistry | 50 (45 compulsory) | 180 |
| Biology (Botany + Zoology) | 100 (90 compulsory) | 360 |
| Total | 200 (180 attempted) | 720 |
Marking Scheme:
- Correct answer: +4 marks
- Wrong answer: -1 mark
- Unattempted: 0 marks
Duration: 3 hours 20 minutes
The NCERT Foundation: Non-Negotiable
Before any other resource, NCERT is the cornerstone of NEET preparation.
For Biology: An estimated 80–85% of NEET Biology questions come directly from NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology textbooks — often word-for-word. Every diagram, every bold term, every table in NCERT Biology must be memorised.
For Chemistry: Physical Chemistry follows NCERT concepts and formulas. Organic and Inorganic Chemistry draw heavily from NCERT examples and reactions.
For Physics: NCERT concepts are the starting point, though NEET Physics questions are typically more application-based than direct NCERT questions.
Subject-Wise Strategy
Biology (360 marks — highest weightage)
Biology is where NEET is won or lost. With 360 of 720 marks, a biology expert who is average at Physics and Chemistry can still crack NEET.
High-weightage chapters (Class 11):
- The Living World and Biological Classification
- Plant Kingdom and Animal Kingdom
- Cell: Structure and Function (Cell Biology — very high weightage)
- Biomolecules
- Digestion and Absorption / Breathing and Gas Exchange
- Body Fluids, Circulation, Excretion
High-weightage chapters (Class 12):
- Genetics and Evolution (Mendelian Genetics, DNA Replication, Gene Expression)
- Reproduction (Flowering plants, Human Reproduction, Reproductive Health)
- Ecology (Ecosystems, Biodiversity, Environmental Issues)
- Biology in Human Welfare (Microbes, Biotechnology)
Biology Strategy:
- Read NCERT chapter → make flashcards for every definition and term
- Draw and redraw all diagrams (labelling is a common question format)
- Revise each chapter weekly; Biology requires repetition
- Practice MCQs for each chapter from MTG Fingertips or DC Pandey Biology
Chemistry (180 marks)
Chemistry has three sections with different preparation approaches:
Physical Chemistry (35–40 marks):
- Mole Concept, Chemical Equilibrium, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Kinetics
- Master NCERT formulas and solve numericals until they become automatic
- Practice numerical questions daily — speed matters
Organic Chemistry (45–50 marks):
- Reaction mechanisms are fundamental
- Learn all named reactions: Cannizzaro, Aldol, Williamson, Diazotisation, etc.
- Focus on: Alcohols, Aldehydes and Ketones, Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Polymers, Biomolecules
Inorganic Chemistry (40–45 marks):
- Most directly from NCERT — especially p-block, d-block, f-block elements
- Memorise trends, exceptions, and reactions of important compounds
- Coordination Chemistry: IUPAC naming, isomerism, hybridisation
Physics (180 marks)
Physics is often the most challenging section for NEET aspirants.
High-weightage chapters:
- Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Gravitation) — 20–25 marks
- Optics (Ray Optics, Wave Optics) — 15–18 marks
- Electrostatics and Current Electricity — 20–25 marks
- Modern Physics (Dual Nature, Atoms, Nuclei) — 12–15 marks
Physics Strategy:
- Master NCERT concepts first — understand the theory
- Derive important formulas yourself (don't just memorise)
- Solve previous year NEET Physics questions by chapter
- For numericals, practice daily — speed and accuracy improve with repetition
- Reference: DC Pandey or HC Verma for concept depth (after NCERT)
Time Management Plan
12-Month Preparation (Starting Class 11)
Months 1–6 (Class 11 Syllabus):
- Complete all Class 11 chapters for Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Monthly chapter tests
- Build NCERT mastery chapter by chapter
Months 7–10 (Class 12 Syllabus):
- Complete Class 12 chapters
- Simultaneously revise Class 11 chapters weekly
- Begin full-length mock tests from Month 9
Months 11–12 (Final Revision):
- Full NEET mock tests (minimum 2 per week)
- Topic-wise revision based on weak areas from mock tests
- Focus on Biology NCERT for final 30 days
Daily Study Schedule (12 hours/day in peak phase)
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 6:00–9:00 AM | Biology (new chapter or revision) |
| 9:30 AM–12:30 PM | Physics (concept + numericals) |
| 1:30–4:30 PM | Chemistry (all three sections in rotation) |
| 5:00–7:00 PM | MCQ practice (previous year questions) |
| 8:00–10:00 PM | Revision of day's topics + flashcard review |
Previous Year Papers: Your Most Important Resource
Solving NEET previous year papers (last 10 years) is the single most effective preparation activity. NEET questions repeat patterns, concepts, and sometimes near-identical questions.
Available from: nta.ac.in (official), MTG publications, and various coaching platforms.
State Quota vs All India Quota
NEET scores are used for two quota categories:
- All India Quota (AIQ): 15% of government seats, counselled by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)
- State Quota: 85% of government seats, counselled by respective state authorities
- Private college seats: Counselled by respective state authorities or university
Frequently Asked Questions
As of the latest NTA guidelines, there is no restriction on the number of NEET attempts. The upper age limit of 25 years (general category) that was previously implemented was struck down by the Supreme Court. Confirm the current policy at nta.ac.in before registering.
For unreserved category in All India Quota government medical colleges, a score of 600+ (out of 720) is generally competitive. For state quota government colleges, the cutoff varies widely by state — some states have cutoffs as low as 450–500 for general category. Check your state's previous year cutoffs.
Coaching is not necessary, but structured guidance helps many students. Self-study with NCERT, quality MCQ books, previous year papers, and online mock tests is sufficient for well-disciplined students. Many students who clear NEET each year are self-taught.
Yes — in fact, they reinforce each other. NEET Biology and Chemistry are almost entirely based on Class 12 NCERT. Strong board exam preparation in these subjects is directly useful for NEET. Physics requires more dedicated NEET-specific practice beyond boards.

NEET demands consistent effort over 2 years more than any single stroke of genius. The students who clear NEET are not necessarily the most brilliant — they are the most disciplined, those who revisited their NCERT again and again and solved thousands of MCQs without shortcuts. Build that discipline early.
